ANAGNORISIS – Caregriever Explores Caregiving and Grief Ahead of October 23 Release

ANAGNORISIS’ fourth album, Caregriever, is streaming at Decibel ahead of its October 23 release, pairing a deeply personal concept with a shift toward industrial and punk elements.

ANAGNORISIS’ fourth album, Caregriever, is streaming in full ahead of its October 23 release. The Louisville, Kentucky black metal band’s first album since Peripeteia (2016) draws on frontman Zachary Kerr’s experience of full-time caregiving, with material that began as a solo project before bringing the core lineup back together.

According to the announcement supplied by Earsplit PR, the album follows the gradual decline and eventual death of a loved one over five years. Its focus extends beyond bereavement to the mourning that can begin during caregiving: the coexistence of devotion and resentment, hope and despair, and the exhaustion of prolonged responsibility. Grief, anger, guilt, depression and isolation inform a concept concerned with both that experience and its aftermath.

Kerr began developing the material in 2023 under the name Caregriever while processing the emotional and physical strain of caring for his now-late father-in-law. He subsequently reconnected with longtime creative partner and ANAGNORISIS guitarist Zak Denham. As their collaboration expanded, the songs became the basis of the band’s fourth full-length rather than a separate solo release.

The pair shared the material with bassist Josh Mumford and drummer Cody McCoy, reuniting the core lineup. Recording began in summer 2024, following the band’s extended hiatus.

The press announcement describes a corresponding change in musical approach. ANAGNORISIS retain their exploration of post-black metal while reducing much of the symphonic scope of earlier releases. Industrial and punk elements enter a darker, more immediate framework, connecting the record’s musical direction to the tension and emotional weight of its subject.

Denham and Kerr produced and recorded Caregriever, with drums and bass tracked at Top Track Studios. Denham also mixed and mastered the album. Mumford contributes backing vocals, Niels Riethorst supplies vocals and lyrics on “Death Of Man,” and James E. Kerr provides samples. Cover art is credited to August Friedrich Schenck and Charles Maurand.

Decibel’s premiere accompanies an interview with ANAGNORISIS in the magazine’s November issue. In the excerpt reproduced in the press announcement, the publication writes, “…devastating circumstances demand devastating music,” and concludes, “This is gripping music that matters.”

ANAGNORISIS were originally active from 2003 to 2016. Their second and third albums, Beyond All Light (2013) and Peripeteia (2016), established the personal subjects that continue into Caregriever, including depression, childhood trauma, grief and self-reflection. Following a limited run of dates supporting Peripeteia and the departure of longtime keyboardist Sam Hartman, the band entered its lengthy break before resuming work behind the scenes in 2024.

The physical release is divided across several imprints: Bölverk Collective handles the US CD, the band’s Negative Reflections handles the US LP, and Vendetta Records issues the European CD and LP editions. So Below Productions releases the cassette. Preorders, bundles and digital presaves are offered through the band’s supplied release links.
