More than fifteen years after Streams Inwards, MAR DE GRISES are preparing a fourth album for release through Season of Mist in 2027. The Chilean progressive death-doom band have renewed their relationship with the label, which announced the agreement on October 22 and supplied a teaser for the forthcoming record.
The album's title and exact release date remain unannounced. In their statement, MAR DE GRISES describe the new material through the geography of their home country: “Once again, with our new album, we are pushing the boundaries of genre. These new songs are dark and cinematic, born from the contrasts of Chile’s landscape, which stretches from the Andes to the Pacific, from the Atacama Desert to Tierra del Fuego.”
That landscape connection also runs through Season of Mist's account of the band's earlier work. The announcement describes a melodic, cinematic approach to progressive death-doom informed by the Andes, Pacific Ocean, Cape Horn, Santiago, Valdivian forests and Atacama Desert. These are the band's and label's descriptions of their musical inspiration; the teaser accompanies an album whose further details are still to come.
Formed in 2000, MAR DE GRISES were previously signed to Finland's Firebox Records. According to Season of Mist, they became the first South American band to join the French label, which released their third album, Streams Inwards, in 2010. The forthcoming record will continue that album catalogue after the extended absence acknowledged in the band's announcement.
Looking back at the period surrounding Streams Inwards, the release recalls tours with Sólstafir, Swallow the Sun and Saturnus, plus festival appearances alongside Opeth, Enslaved and Katatonia. It also reproduces an Exclaim! review describing MAR DE GRISES as “singularly unique while raising the bar for contemporaries, like comparably brilliant groups such as Swans or Anathema before them”. That assessment concerns the earlier album, which remains available through Season of Mist.
The renewed label agreement arrives ahead of two Santiago appearances included in the announcement: MAR DE GRISES will headline Cryptic Celebration VII at Teatro Cariola on October 30, 2026, before opening for Opeth at Movistar Arena on November 1, 2026.
The announced lineup comprises Rodrigo Morris and Sergio Álvarez on guitars, Rodrigo Gálvez on bass, Juan Escobar on vocals and synths, and Pablo Martínez on drums. Photography accompanying the announcement is credited to Sebastián Domínguez.
