German atmospheric black metallers BONJOUR TRISTESSE have unveiled the title track from their fifth album, Disaster Triumphant, ahead of its November 20 international release through AOP Records. The 12:20 song follows the previously revealed “Tomb of Hope,” with both recordings available on the label’s official YouTube channel.
The new album draws its title and much of its conceptual framework from Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno’s Dialectic of Enlightenment. According to the announcement circulated by Suspicious Activities PR, founder Nathanael, also of HERETOIR, was strongly influenced by the philosophers’ examination of progress and its contradictions.
The announcement cites the passage behind the album’s name: “The Enlightenment has always aimed at liberating men from fear and establishing their sovereignty. Yet the fully enlightened earth radiates disaster triumphant.”
That tension informs the record’s critique of industrial civilization. As outlined in the announcement, the Enlightenment’s challenge to superstition and religion sits alongside new constraints imposed on humanity and nature through technological progress, mass society and ideas of human supremacy. Most of the songs address the destructive consequences of this supposedly enlightened world.
The broader lyrical territory also includes loss, grief, melancholy, interpersonal feelings and the desire to withdraw from an increasingly chaotic world. Those subjects connect with BONJOUR TRISTESSE’s stated atmospheric black metal approach: reverence for nature and grief over environmental destruction, alongside anger, alienation and inner emptiness. The announcement also emphasizes resilience and the strength of standing alone against adversity.
Abismo Black Arts created the album cover, which the announcement describes as reflecting the same ambivalence explored in the philosophical text and the record.
Disaster Triumphant contains five tracks in this order: “The Heights of Despair” (11:02), “At the Mountains of Silence” (11:45), “Tomb of Hope” (10:22), “Lingering in the Twilight of Shadows” (1:55) and “Disaster Triumphant” (12:20). Four of the five pieces exceed ten minutes, with the newly revealed title track closing the album.
